#2 Preliminary – Photography Techniques & Mood in Media

Hey everyone, Adrian here. This week, we explored photography techniques and how they can influence meaning and mood in visual storytelling. I uploaded several images where I experimented with depth of field, lighting, and framing

Dawn dish soap – Shallow Focus, Natural Light

This photo uses a shallow depth of field to bring sharp attention to the subject in the foreground while blurring out the background. It helps create intimacy and focus.

Macbook – Backlighting

Here, I positioned the subject against the light, creating a silhouette effect. This gave the image a mysterious, almost haunting feeling perfect for suspense or emotion driven moments.

Yogurt – Shallow Depth of Field

In this shot, I used a shallow depth of field where the subject is in sharp focus, while the entire background is heavily blurred. This effect pulls all attention toward the subject and creates a clean, cinematic feel perfect for emotional or introspective moments.

Bluey Backpack – Natural Light with Warm Hue

This one used warm daylight to create a cozy, comforting vibe. The golden tones made the subject feel approachable and relatable, which is ideal for character driven scenes.

Bluey Backpack – Harsh Overhead Light

I used overhead sunlight to emphasize contrast and shadows, which gave the photo a grittier, more realistic feel great for action or raw documentary-style shots.

Bluey Backpack – Low-Angle Lighting

This image uses underlighting, where a light source is positioned below the subject, casting dramatic shadows upwards. This technique is often used in horror or suspense to create an unsettling, eerie mood making the subject look mysterious or even threatening.

Blurring the background made the subject stand out more, especially their face and expression. Lighting also changed everything side lighting felt intense, underlighting felt creepy, and warm tones made it feel softer and emotional.

These tricks will help a lot when I start designing posters or social media content for my campaign. Knowing how to control the mood through focus and light makes things look way more professional.
